There was true devine intervention leading us through this entire project. Each volunteer signed up for a different room to decorate. None of us coordinated with each other before hand, but the entire apartment resulted in a blended theme and well coordinated. The purpose of the project is to provide a warm and comfortable home for the family working with donated furniture and accessories. Just when we thought we would need to go out and purchase an item to complete the furnishings of a room, someone would donate the piece of furniture in need and the peice worked out perfectly with the existing decor. Now that is truly Gods hand in action.
Everything you can think of that is needed to run a functional household was donated for this family. The cabinets were filled to the brim with food. Closets filled with household supplies and more. It was truly amazing to witness this empty apartment slowly transform into a warm and welcoming home with anything and everything to meet this families daily needs.
The icing on the cake is when I witnessed the looks on the childrens face when they walked in through the front door. Their smiles were from ear to ear. They lasted two minutes in the living room before running to see their rooms. The girls reaction was priceless and the laughter was so rewarding. The little boy quickly found his new bucket of cars and didn't leave his room until snacks were served.
I had the priviledge of decorating the boys room. The valance, bed spread, bed, dresser, work table, rocking chair and small accessories were dontaed. Of course I couldn't resist purchasing items to complete the room. To complete the room, I added the activity rug, curtain panels, fleece blanket, sweet stuffed frog, linens, lamps, "abc" picture and legos. My son donated books and cars from his personal collection for the finishing touch.
I also helped with the living room. All the furniture was donated. I just had to purchase curtains from Ikea for $14 and I made the panels on the wall above the sofa to add art to the room. The panels added some impact to the walls without spending a lot of money. I painted the panels a creamy white and finished them with an antique glaze. I stapled a coordinating fabric to the back of the panels and Voila! instant art for the wall. (The panels are from my china cabinet...a future project to share :)
I had so much fun doing this project and I will remember the joy on the kids faces for a very long time. Knowing there is one less family out there away from harm and abuse also comforts me. I pray for courage for the Mother and peace and happiness for the kids.
